Sleep Token: Religion, Devotion and Mystique
The music industry has tended into predictable structures and lyrics lacking in deeper meaning. The genre of metal is no exception to this shift, yet the UK-based band Sleep Token has carved out their own niche. The combination of their heavy metal with softer lyrical tones, combined with the mystery of the anonymous members, has created a devoted fanbase. The band integrates progressive metal with mythology, almost pop-like singing, and richly detailed lore about the titular deity named “Sleep”.
The value of this branding strategy is the allure of their anonymity, the power of a narrative, and empathy, all enhanced by the transcendent performances the band gives. These influences have allowed Sleep Token to skyrocket into fame, primarily with their viral songs “Take Me Back to Eden” and “The Summoning”, selling out a 10,000-strong Wembley Arena concert in just ten minutes. This band can teach others valuable lessons about standing out in favor of marketability, as well as the creation of a compelling story over time. Because of this, I believe that Sleep Token’s approach to music-crafting and aesthetic presentation offers a blueprint for bands seeking to stand out in a highly saturated genre.
Outside of the metal and alternative fanbase, Sleep Token is far less known. Despite their outward presentation, Sleep Token is certainly not an average heavy band. Formed in London in 2016, the four anonymous members of the troop remain nameless. The singer, simply called I or “Vessel”, wears dark robes over painted skin. This man is said to be the human conduit for a deity known as “Sleep”, whose real name is unspeakable by human tongue. The other members—known only as II (drums), III (bass), and IV (guitars)—are equally mysterious. They dress identically to Vessel, wearing masks of their own covered in the band’s unique symbols.
The band’s first two EPs were equally as mysterious in name; they self-released their first EP in 2016, aptly named One, but signed with Basick Records to release Two the following year. The sound the band has cultivated is wholly unique, merging pop, R&D, and djent tones. Sleep Token has found balance between delicate piano melodies and heavy metal tracks. From Aqua Regia to Gods, soft whispers and guttural screams meet in surprising equilibrium.
This fusion supports a uncommon manner of lyrical structure, with the band utilizing peculiar and striking word choice to make their messages stand out:
“My, my, those eyes like fire
I'm a winged insect, you're a funeral pyre…
Reset my patiеnt violence along both lines of a pathway higher
Grow back your sharpest teeth, you know my desire” -Sleep Token, Take Me Back to Eden
The main focus of Sleep Token, though, is their story, one that has been crafted over years of work and hours of album time. While the complete lore of Sleep Token is debated, one thing is clear: Vessel remains the face of the band, committed to worshipping the primordial deity named Sleep. With each song being an offering, a token, to this god, we can see where the band gets its name. Through years of audience speculation, a story appears within the cryptic lyrics.
Throughout their track history, Vessel expounds on his relationship with Sleep, beginning with his seduction by the goddess in Thread the Needle. He succumbs to Sleep for the first time in Fields of Elation, believing that “nobody else can pull me out” from his past mistakes. However, it is clear from the jump that Sleep does not actually value Vessel. This is a textbook abusive relationship from the moment they met, first hinted at in When the Bough breaks. This song was written from Sleep’s perspective, noting how Vessel “doesn’t love, just hates to be alone”, asking him repeatedly to “don’t lie to me”. Here, we see that neither values the other, and only begins this relationship to benefit themselves; Sleep needs a Vessel to feed off of, and Vessel needs the company of something that justifies his actions. Through the next album, Vessel becomes wholly devoted to Sleep, even going so far as to torture his past lover in Nazareth. He “load[s] the gun”, seeing “if she can guess what a hollow point does to a naked body”. He intends to shoot his ex in order to prove his devotion to Sleep. From here, the motif of vore begins, with Vessel imploring Sleep to eat him in Jaws, invoking an almost christ-like sacrifice in terms of imagery.
The next album, however, indicates a shift in Vessel’s perception of Sleep. In Dark Signs, Vessel starts to reflect on the red flags Sleep has shown from the start, remarking that he “hates who I have become” three separate times. It is clear that Sleep is making him worse. This realization comes to a head in Gods, where Vessel is driven into rage, asking Sleep “Do you like the way it feels? Like fire from the Heavens…”. This awareness doesn’t last long, however, as he relapses into infatuation in Sugar and Drag Me Under, which carries all through their next album This Place Will Become Your Tomb. He even attempts suicide prior to the album’s first song Atlantic, which begins with him waking up in a hospital after the attempt. Despite this, he begs to be let alone, to fall back into Sleep’s control in Hypnosis.
Finally, the last album Take Me Back to Eden shows Vessel’s escape from Sleep. After a last infatuation in Chokehold and The Summoning, he finally comes to terms with their relationship in Granite and Ascensionism. He confronts Sleep, asking her to “watch me ascend” and exposing that she “makes me wish I could disappear”. He addresses Sleep for the last time in Take Me Back to Eden, addressing the toxicity of their relationship with a clear mind. The lyrics mentioned earlier show this mental shift clearly; by describing Sleep as a “funeral pyre” and himself as an insect, he invokes the imagery of a moth to a flame. He asks her to hurt him again in a facetious tone, commanding her to “Grow back your sharpest teeth, you know my desire” - he finally feels empowered to speak out on the abuse. In Euclid, Vessel begins to move on and grow outside of Sleep’s control.
While many other bands have utilized storytelling in their work- Gorillaz, for example, with the story of Murdoc Niccals and the other members of the virtual group- Sleep Token's narrative goes one step further, creating a deeply immersive and emotional experience for fans through the addition of mystery and religion. Their unique mythology lets their story shine above the competition, engaging their audience past the sound of their music alone. The aesthetic of the band supports their narrative as well, with all members painted black and adorned in white decorative masks and dark robes. The imagery they create both sonically and visually elicit an almost cult-like aspect of the group, encouraging fans to become equally as obsessed with Sleep as Vessel. I found myself gravitating towards them before any other metal band- in fact, I didn’t even look into other groups for months after discovering Sleep Token. To me, this band had all I was looking for. There are many hardcore fans online- on Reddit, for one - that helped me get involved in new and exciting ways. I began speculating alongside them within mere weeks of discovering Sleep Token. The band itself has no investment into these groups; they’ve formed organically and lasted years with an impressive eighty-seven thousand “worshippers”, in their own words.
Whether the speculation on the story of Vessel is correct, there are many important takeaways from this music- save for the religious lyricism, this is a story of an abusive relationship. Vessel believes he needs Sleep to thrive, which ends up hurting him and others in the process. The idea of religious worship reminds us that putting a partner on a pedestal is dangerous for both parties. From another perspective, Sleep represents Vessel’s most dark desires, allowing him to feed into his own malice for temporary euphoria. Their music exemplifies powerful emotions, ones rooted in conflict and saturated with flaws. It shows us the damage of unrequited love and the loss of boundaries in victims of abuse. The band creates wide-reaching culture resonance through timeless relationship archetypes, allowing many different types of fans to relate to their work.
These concepts are not new in most genres of music, but Sleep Token’s execution of these ideas is potent. They not only appreciate the speculation about Sleep and Vessel, they lean into it, creating cryptic clues through their iconography and merch drops. The band used a combination of Futhark and alchemicals runes in their album Sundowning, as well as Elder Futhark constructions in the band’s primary logo. They also left coordinate clues in their hoodie merch for This Place Will Become Your Tomb. This left fans reeling on the meaning of the location and excited about future music the band releases. This aspect of speculation and anticipation is key to the success of a band. While fans discuss whether Sleep is an actual woman, a god, or part of Vessel himself, a positive message shines through- moving on from those that hurt you is a difficult but necessary process, one that will free you to the true joy life has to offer.
I highly recommend fans of metal, funk and R&B to check out this band. With such a diverse sound, picking definitive tracks is challenging. Therefore, for new listeners, here are some to start with:
Hypnosis: A lesser-known 2021 track that incorporates haunting vocals and deeply moving djent guitar lines.
Ascensionism: A rich, 7 minute slice of the band’s quiet and percussive tones.
The Summoning: The band’s most popular song that achieved virality on TikTok. that encapsulates Sleep Token’s ability to seamlessly merge heaviness, melody, and funk.
Sleep Token is more than a band—they are an experience. While fans of metal disagree on their placement in the genre, their deviant sound is exactly why new listeners and metal veterans should listen. By delivering hard-hitting messages that stand out from the norm, this band has undoubtedly created a niche where art and identity intertwine.

Three things I don’t know about this band:
Their performance history. I’ve only been a fan for a year or two, and haven’t been to a concert in person yet nor have read up on their performances thus far.
Any information on the band members, but nobody else knows this either. They’re perfectly anonymous, and refuse to show their faces.
The history behind the creation of the band. This isn’t well known either, but I don’t have any knowledge on how this band was made, nor their reasoning for doing so.
Things I know nothing about, and actively dislike:
Friends, Gilmore Girls, other old TV show “classics”. I have struggled to enjoy anything in a sitcom format, as it fails to capture my interest enough to continue watching.
Phantom of the Opera, theater in general: I have found theater uninteresting for much of my life, as the constant singing and lack of depth in sets is off-putting.
